And while it may be scary, dropping a class may be the way to go. But dropping a class means I’m a bad student! First off, no. That’s a lie we tend to tell ourselves because we feel bad about finding ourselves in a difficult situation. There isn’t a perfect list of reasons why you should or should not drop a class. In the end, it comes down to a handful of things: what can you do to improve your class performance, and how would keeping/dropping this class affect you. What can you do to improve? If you’re already skipping this class continuously, if you’re not doing the homework, if you haven’t opened the book since September 1st, these could all contribute to a bad grade in one of your courses. If you aren’t putting the effort in, it becomes that much harder to get a good grade out of it. In these cases, perhaps you just need to get motivated. Get up for the 9 a.m., go to the office hours even though it seems super awkward, don’t start your homework at 11:00 p.m. if its due at 11:59 p.m. If you can do better, try that before you drop the class. That said, if you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing, it’s suddenly a different case. Sometimes your professor just doesn’t explain concepts well, or the book doesn’t make sense. If you’ve read the book and done the homework and you’re still feeling lost, maybe it’s time to consider dropping. It sucks sometimes when things just don’t click, but it should be noted that just because you don’t get it now doesn’t mean a new teacher and a new perspective might not help.   How would keeping/dropping this class affect you? While it is okay to drop classes, you have to understand what that means. Dropping a class could mean going below a certain credit requirement for a scholarship or leave you under the university requirement of twelve credits per semester. If the class is required for your major, you may have to retake this class no matter what, and this course may be a prerequisite for the next class for your major. Dropping a class doesn’t make you a bad person and it won’t ruin your academic career, but it isn’t something that should be taken lightly. But again, there are no perfect reasons to drop a class. If keeping a class you aren’t doing well in is really straining your well-being, maybe you’d be better off dropping. If you can’t stand your teacher and feel like they’re the reason you’re not learning, maybe taking it next semester with a new professor will help things. If you know you’ll never be able to get up at 7 a.m. for that Anthro class, maybe consider retaking the class next year but at 11 a.m. If this class is an elective and you really don’t need it, drop it.   Is there anything else I can do to avoid dropping? There are a few different options if you really don’t want to drop a class. Credit/No Credit Course Along with the drop deadline, October 18th is also the Credit/No Credit deadline. Denoting a course as Credit/No Credit means that as long as you get a C- or higher in the class, you pass. What makes this unique is the grade for class will not affect your GPA. You’ll simply get the credits. This is good for if you’re scared a C will ruin your 4.0 but know you’ll definitely pass the class. This method, however, can’t be used on courses required for your major. So no Credit/No Credit for JOUR 200 if you’re a Journalism major. However, this shouldn’t be something you go to whenever times get rough. Grad schools are more likely to pick applicants with fewer C/NC classes than with a bunch, and if you end up getting no credit, some schools automatically count that class as an F because they don’t know if you got a D+ or an F-. Pick Up an 8-week Course If you’re worried about not having enough credits or getting behind on getting through your Gen Eds, then an 8-week course might be right up your alley! A lot of them are online and they come in a variety of different majors and concentrations. While it will be a faster learning style because you only have half a semester to get through it, it will keep you from getting behind if you already have a plan for what classes you’re taking in the semesters to come. Things to Remember You’re not a bad person for dropping a class. You’re not disappointing anyone and this isn’t because you’re stupid. Sometimes situations arise that don’t make for the best learning environment, and the best move might be to take a break. But dropping a class doesn’t mean you can’t take it again or take something similar. It’s not quittingâ€"it’s recalculating to find the best route for your academic future. When to Push Off Applying to Med School You should consider waiting to apply to med school if: †¢ You have a decreasing trend in your GPA This is the number one reason why many students will receive a rejection from medical schools. If you have a decreasing trend and you have already graduated, I recommend that you complete postbaccalaureate coursework to create an increasing trend by taking upper division biological science courses, most similar to the level taught at medical school. I have written and published a book, The Definitive Guide to Pre-Medical Postbaccalaureate Programs, about all the different types of postbac programs as well as alternative paths to medical school. †¢ You have not retaken any of the classes in which you received failing grades Retake any courses in which you received a D or F for a higher grade as soon as possible to demonstrate your improvement as a student. I recommend making this step your priority, if you have already graduated. It is best to retake the same classes, if at all possible. If not, you can take equivalent courses. †¢ You have not maintained a full course load of upper division science courses, earning all A’s and B’s If you have a C every quarter or semester without consistent improvement, this can be a red flag. It’s best to take a full course load of all science classes and maintain a strong GPA before you apply. Selection committees are looking for evidence that you are ready for medical school. It’s a terrible experience when a student is asked to leave a medical school. It’s painful for three reasons: †¢ It hurts the student on an individual level – it’s devastating psychologically. †¢ It’s bad for the morale of the student’s class. Medical school is already a high pressure environment. †¢ It’s terrible for the reputation of the school and specifically the committee members who decided to admit the failing student. Selection committees are under enormous pressure to select only students who will thrive in their school’s academic setting. When to Apply to Med School with a Low Science GPA If the criteria listed above don’t describe you, to be successful in applying with a low science GPA, consider the following strategies: †¢ Carefully select and apply only to schools that have a history of accepting students with lower numbers. †¢ Directly address the reasons for the low numbers early in your education in your essays – state the facts, don’t provide excuses. My musical story begins in the hills and countryside of Kentucky, where my family has lived since the early 1700s. Bluegrass music was created in Kentucky, originally emerging from English and Scottish folk music. The Bluegrass State has almost entirely influenced my musical preferences. Listening to the bluegrass of my Papaws youth and the 70s country my mom loves attracted me to country music. My heritage has played a major role in my musical influences. Papaw was born in 1934 in Buckner, Kentucky. His father was a sharecropper, and as a result of his alcoholism, the family of fourteen had to migrate from farm to farm. His rural upbringing influenced his musical tastes, and he treasures bluegrass music to this day. He vacations in his camper to bluegrass festivals as far as West Virginia. Mamaw was born in 1930 in Webster, Kentucky. She grew up in a family shattered by an abusive father, amidst vicious arguments between the Catholics and Baptists. When her mother died in 1937, her father sent her and her siblings to live in an orphanage in Louisville as opposed to ceding the children to the Baptist relatives. Living among her peers, she gravitated to the music of her time, including Frank Sinatra and Conway Twitty. Don’t waste time! Her family lived there for a short time while Papaw worked in a printing factory. He moved her and her six sisters back to Kentucky when my mom was four. My moms musical preferences derive from her rural upbringing. She appreciates old country, such as Waylon Jennings and Charlie Pride, as well as modern favorites with simple beats, including Ed Sheeran and Phillip Phillips. My father was born in Santa Ana, California, in 1965. He grew up in an instrument playing family; however, my dads hobbies differed. As a child, he enjoyed playing sports instead of instruments. Today, he listens to the music from his youth, including classic rock. His move to Kentucky in 1995 introduced him to country music. I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2000. Throughout my childhood, I established consistent musical preferences. I listened to modern country music in my dads car and old country and gospel in my moms. I still listen to country music in the car because of these early influences. Also, my best friend, Emma Topp, and I spent our weekends together all through elementary school indulging Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and Selena Gomez. I gained formal music experience through studying the violin from age 4 to 14. I played a conglomeration of Catholic hymns and fiddle music. While I didnt relish listening to hymns while sitting in church, I enjoyed playing them; however, fiddle music was my favorite because I could play fast. I played hundreds of bluegrass songs for my Papaw. For Christmas when I was 9, my Uncle Don in California gave me a guitar. I exhausted hours learning to play, but I never perfected it. Because my Uncle Don was so far away, I didnt have the guidance to refine my playing, so I would still consider myself a beginner. Additionally, from a young age, I reveled in watching American Idol. This contributed to my taste in music because one of the runners up, Crystal Bowersox, is one of my favorite singers to this day. Her songs are soulful country, and this remains one of my favored categories of country music. My musical influences also include my peers. From attending homecoming and prom, to cruising around town, I developed a taste for rap. Rap music ties our generation together with its catchy rhythms and sounds. My favorite rappers include Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Post Malone. I also like pop music; however this genre is overplayed and I tire of it easily. As much as I adore rap, country music will always hold an exclusive place in my heart. Old country is soothing to me, especially when I am overwhelmed. Also, in my agriculture classes in high school, we played country music on the speakers as we worked. Country music epitomizes jubilant memories in my life. My favorite country singers are Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, and Carrie Underwood. However, my current favorite song is Kentucky Bred by David Tucker. Several of the references in the song reflect who I am and where I come from, such as riding in a truck bed, going to church on Sundays, and Ale 8, which is a ginger ale drink only made in Kentucky. Kentucky culture has always been emulated in the types of music in which I listen. My papaw loves to take our family to bluegrass festivals, and bluegrass is always fiddling in his house. If my childhood was summarized into one song, it would be Rocky Top, by the Osborne Brothers. It is a song that is treasured among several generations. In addition, every year on the Kentucky Derby, we celebrate with a Derby party at our house, and all of our extended family and friends are in attendance. We all gather in our basement and sing My Old Kentucky Home simultaneously with the rest of the Bluegrass State. Music is always playing in my life. While driving, in the shower, studying, or even doing laundry. Music motivates me, and I follow its rhythms and melodies as I work. Even when I listen to music for entertainment, my roommate, our friend, and I enjoy imagining fun dances to our favorite songs, especially with the Latin rhythms of Shakira. Childhood influences almost every aspect of a persons life: their food preferences, good or bad habits, and of course, musical tastes. I was never exposed to electronic or heavy metal as a child, so I find these genres annoying today. Ive listened to rap since middle school, and I cherish it to this day. However, country music was the sounds of my childhood, and it will always be my favorite as it represents my culture, my lifestyle, and ultimately who I am.
